CAS Delivers Risk Management Education to New Mexico and Oklahoma Beginning Producers
1023 Views

CAS’ John Mangus recently spent time in the states of New Mexico and Oklahoma to deliver risk management and crop insurance training to beginning producers involved in FFA programs at high schools in those states.  Mangus presented introductory risk management and crop insurance informational workshops to beginning producers at four New Mexico locations and five Oklahoma locations, to educate over 500 participants.

Delivering "Farming is Risky Business," a presentation which includes an introduction to risk and risk management concepts, Mangus conducted a total of  twenty-nine presentations among the nine locations.  Participants joined in a computer-simulation game where each ”rancher” makes operating and marketing decisions on a cow-calf / wheat farming operation.  Contestants enjoy the opportunity to make decisions on their own hypothetical farm and try to earn as much as possible during a 6 year operating period.  The game has proven beneficial in introducing players to the idea of risk and risk management, as well as the use of crop insurance to manage agricultural risk.

CAS appreciates the assistance of the New Mexico and Oklahoma FFA organizations and participating vo-ag instructors for coordinating and facilitating these workshops.
